How do you develop creative culture?

Creative culture has become something of a buzzword over the last few years. In the business world, companies are starting to believe they need to have a creative culture in order to compete in the marketplace. This, of course, depends entirely on the business and the market, but overall I think it’s true.

In my experience, creative culture can’t be engineered. It can be fostered. It can be grown. But the roots have to be there. And the roots are the people.

Civilization: The West and the Rest

Civilization by Niall Ferguson

A while back, I discovered Niall Ferguson via a TED talk that he gave on what he called the 6 Killer Apps of Prosperity. It was a fascinating take on why Western Civilization rose to prominence. The last few years I’ve become a bit more preoccupied with history—especially the history of The United States. Change seems to be coming at a rapid rate. A lot of it not so good. The general rationale for the success of the U.S.A runs the spectrum from “American Exceptionalism” and divine providence to exploitation and war. None of those rationales ever really seemed right to me. They are too simplistic.

The pursuit of normal: It’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

A great deal of the lives we live and the societies we have built revolve around the creation of a “normal” life. They are structured. They have rules. These rules create expectations—expectations around our behavior. If we don’t operate within these expectations, we waste energy and resources. It is a necessity for a large society such as ours to function.
